To an extent yes, SDE roles are given a higher pay than Data scientists acc to different websites but that shouldn’t matter. Since you are in first year your focus should be exploring all the possible areas and then decide what makes you happy.

In short, I'll recommend you to complete your education with full dedication, It doesn't matter how much AI and Automation arise. The thing is every employer needs humans who can think out of box not only inside the box.
