Target a specific niche in AI/ML. When you are an experienced person and trying to switch domain, you will not be treated as fresher even if you joined at entry level position. Also, it will easier for you to grab opportunities with experience.
Though it is always handy if you are from IT background but for non-technical, if your profession align with targetted organization, that will definitely help.
E.g. You have worked in automobile industry in sales before. Tesla is looking for AI Engineer. You will definitely have edge in case.
For roadmap, I would recommend Andrew Ng Coursera modules to get started. You may refer roadmap.sh for detailed roadmap.
There are multiple opportunities in domain ranging from AI Engineer, ML Ops Expert and many more.
Average salary in good companies ranging from 10 - 12 LPA but it varies from oraganization to organization and person expertise.
