Mentee Question

Asked by subhadip das

Hello Saransh, I trust you're doing well! I have a background as a Software Test Engineer at a service-based firm, where I gained three years of experience. However, I do have an employment gap of more than four years. Currently, I'm in the process of learning Web Development and have previously prepared for Data Structures and Algorithms. My goal is to transition to a Frontend Dev at product firms. Navigating this transition has been challenging due to a lack of clear guidance. I'm uncertain about how to prepare for these companies since they appear to have distinct sets of expectations. For instance, creating a portfolio that highlights my skills rather than my background is a challenge for me. Given your expertise, do you think I might be setting my sights too high considering my profile? Should I consider re-adjusting my target ? If not, how can I enhance my marketability for SDE 1 Frontend roles at product companies? Your insights would be invaluable. Thanks Subhadip

Hi Subhadip, Thats a great question, and I want to tell you that you are not alone. I see so many profiles where there is a career gap, or they want to transition to a completely new role etc. One thing I would say is to keep your LinkedIn profile upto date and mark yourself as looking out for job (at least to recruiters) option. That will ensure you are on the radar and give as many interviews as possible you can.

From a skillset perspective, If you are looking for a frontend job, learning React and JavaScript can be a boon. There are tons of free tutorials on YouTube for this so do go and study some of it. Finally, if you are able to clear the interviews, you will get the job irrespective of your past experience
