What is VC? What skills do you need to land a VC job? Is MBA or finance background mandatory? My path to venture capital
Blog
Venture Capital is one of the most sought after jobs in the world of finance.
It's one of those rare jobs that pays you good money (if not the highest) while at the same time allows you to be on top of the latest happenings around the world. It's as if you are being paid to learn about the latest trends in technology and where the world is heading. In my opinion, it is by far the most intellectually satisfying jobs you can get if you are in the field of finance.
If you are interested in learning more about Venture Capital and how to get in, then this article is for you.
Picture this: you've got a revolutionary idea, a game-changer, but you need more than just pocket change to make it happen. That's where venture capital comes in. They are groups of experienced investors betting on your potential and offering you guidance, connections, and of course, money! Sure, they'll take a stake in your company, but it's a small price to pay for the chance to turn your vision into reality. It's a partnership in its true sense- where risk and reward go hand in hand.
Many assume a finance background or an MBA is necessary for a job in venture capital. While that experience is definitely helpful, it’s not required. Venture capital is more than just crunching numbers. It's about having knowledge of the first principles about running a business.
Here are a few ways you can get into VC without prior finance background or MBA:
All of this reflects that you have skills that are needed in an everyday VC job such as market research, due diligence, networking, negotiation, etc.
Of course basic knowledge of finance is needed but that can be easily acquired on the job or through some crash course on the web. As you progress in your role, you keep honing your skills until you become a seasoned investor.
Although I come from a finance background, I did not land a VC job right out of college. Instead, I worked with a Fin-Tech startup that catered to the education sector. It was a sales role which involved speaking with a lot of Ed-tech entrepreneurs and hence I developed some expertise about Ed-tech sector. This led me to a role in a startup accelerator and then to angel investing platforms and finally a VC!
If startups and new ideas is what gives you a kick and you are all set to get into the VC world, I would love to be your mentor and accelerate your journey to your dream job!
